Train Drivers’ Strike Halts Services Across Greece on Thursday

To minimize disruption for passengers, Hellenic Train, in coordination with the union, has adjusted its timetable.

Rail services across Greece, including the suburban network, are running on limited schedules on Thursday, September 11, as train drivers stage a 24-hour strike. The action was called by the Panhellenic Union of Train Drivers (PEPE) in protest against the dismissal of three veteran employees who were close to retirement and had longstanding health problems.

The union has raised concerns that, despite the dismissals, staff are being pushed into excessive overtime while many have yet to take their entitled leave from 2024. The move comes at a time when Hellenic Train, the country’s main rail operator, receives more than 50 million euros annually in state subsidies.

In line with legal requirements, the union has provided essential staff to cover urgent social needs during the strike. It has also demanded the reinstatement of the dismissed workers, pledging to continue its campaign until the company reverses its decision.

To minimize disruption for passengers, Hellenic Train, in coordination with the union, has adjusted its timetable, announcing suspensions and modifications across the national and suburban rail network.
