Crete Fisherman Dies in Atlantic Storm at Age 33

A 33-year-old Greek professional fisherman from Crete perished in a storm off the U.S. coast, along with six colleagues, leaving family and his hometown in mourning

Tragedy struck the Greek community when 33-year-old fisherman Giannis Rousanidis, originally from Kokkinos Pyrgos, Tympaki in Crete, lost his life in the Atlantic Ocean during a severe storm. He was aboard the fishing vessel Lily Jean with six colleagues when extreme weather conditions struck, leading to the loss of all seven on board.

Giannis had spent several years working abroad as a professional fisherman. His untimely death has left family, friends, and the wider community of Mesara in deep mourning.

Rescue teams conducted coordinated search operations, but the intense sea conditions severely hampered efforts, dramatically reducing the chances of survival or recovery.

In a heartfelt message, Giannis’ sister urged the public to remember him: “He was a proud Greek and loved his homeland deeply. Keep him in your heart and remember him with a prayer.”
