Cyprus Will Not Join Military Operations After Drone Strike, President Says

The Cypriot President said the country will continue to serve its humanitarian role, positioning itself “as part of the solution, not the problem,” and acting responsibly with the safety of its citizens as its top priority.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, has assured citizens that “our country is not participating in any way, nor does it intend to become part of any military operation,” following a drone strike on the British base at Akrotiri.

In a direct message to the public, the president said he chose to brief citizens personally about the events that unfolded overnight. At 12:03 a.m., he reported, an Iranian-made Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicle struck within the military installations of the British Bases in Akrotiri, causing minor material damage.

Christodoulides stressed that from the very first moment, all competent services of the Republic were placed on full operational alert. He also convened the National Security Council to assess the situation, noting that the body remains in continuous consultation as developments are closely monitored.

The president added that he is in communication with European leaders and heads of other states, underscoring the seriousness with which Nicosia is treating the incident.

Nicosia’s Position
Highlighting Cyprus’s location in a region marked by intense geopolitical instability and multiple challenges, Christodoulides reiterated in emphatic terms that the country will not be drawn into military operations.

Despite the heightened tensions, he said Cyprus will continue to serve its humanitarian role, positioning itself “as part of the solution, not the problem,” and acting responsibly with the safety of its citizens as its top priority.

“We are doing what must be done, with our foremost concern being the security of the country and its citizens,” the president concluded.
