A ferry carrying more than 260 people capsized off the coast of Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus on Sunday, according to Turkish media reports. There are no immediate reports of casualties.
The catamaran-style vessel had departed from occupied Kyrenia and was headed for the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province when it began taking on water a few miles offshore. Officials in the occupied area told Turkish state broadcaster TRT that the ferry had overturned and that rescue crews were already at the scene.
An official in occupied Kyrenia told CNN Türk that 159 of the 258 people aboard had been reached so far. Video from the scene shows passengers in life vests floating in the water around the overturned vessel.
Several companies operate ferries on the busy Kyrenia-Tasucu route, and it’s not yet known which one ran the vessel that capsized.
