Μake us preferred on Google A search and rescue operation near the Greek island of Symi has ended successfully after all eight people aboard a sailing yacht were located in the sea and rescued, according to information from Greece’s public broadcaster ERT.
All eight survivors are reported to be in good health.
The first people found were a man and a woman, who managed to reach the area of Panormitis on the island. Their discovery immediately triggered a large-scale rescue operation involving two vessels from the Hellenic Coast Guard and a helicopter from the Hellenic Air Force.
Shortly before midnight, another woman managed to swim to shore and was located by a fishing boat.
A little after 1:20 a.m., a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel found four more people, bringing the total number of rescued individuals to seven.
Authorities then focused their efforts on locating the final missing person, a man.
Since the early morning hours, a Coast Guard vessel and an Air Force helicopter continued searching the area and eventually located the last missing individual, successfully completing the rescue operation.
