Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the first deliveries of natural gas from Greece will begin in January, calling the new agreement “extremely important” for Ukraine as it braces for a difficult winter. The announcement was made in a public statement in which Zelensky also expressed gratitude for Greece’s support since the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Zelensky emphasized that the deal, signed during his meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, includes a letter of intent for gas supplies specifically aimed at helping Ukraine manage the winter months. He stressed that the country’s energy network has been repeatedly targeted by missile and drone strikes, leaving many power plants and gas facilities damaged.

According to Zelensky, the upcoming gas deliveries form a key part of Ukraine’s broader winter energy plan, which seeks to secure stable supplies despite continued Russian attacks on critical infrastructure. He added that the cooperation with Greece also includes long-term arrangements that will support Ukraine beyond this winter.

The Ukrainian president thanked Mitsotakis, Greek officials, and the companies involved, noting that their contribution is vital to ensuring the agreement is fully implemented. “Thank you, Greece,” he wrote, underscoring Athens’ consistent support for Ukraine throughout the conflict.
