Hostages Taken at German Bank After Car Robbery Attempt

Armed suspects barricaded inside a Volksbank vault in Sinzig are holding multiple hostages. The town center is on lockdown

The small western German town of Sinzig has been under siege since Friday morning. According to an official statement from authorities, an attempted robbery of an armored cash transport vehicle escalated, with hostages currently being held inside a local Volksbank branch.

How It Unfolded

The incident began at around 9:00 a.m. local time, when a cash transport vehicle pulled up outside the bank. As one of the employees stepped out to enter the building, at least one unidentified man immobilized him at gunpoint.

According to German newspaper BILD, the suspects and the armored car employee being held hostage are currently barricaded inside the bank’s vault.

“Several Suspects” Confirmed

Police confirmed that the situation remains “static,” though the exact number of individuals involved is still unclear. “We currently believe there are several suspects and hostages inside the bank,” a police spokesperson stated, adding that one of the hostages is the armored vehicle’s driver.

Town in Lockdown — Special Forces Deployed

The town center has been completely sealed off. Special police units (SEK) have been deployed to the scene, helicopters are circling overhead, and the armored transport vehicle remains stationary in front of the bank’s entrance.

Authorities have reassured residents outside the perimeter that there is no danger to the general public, while also urging social media users not to spread unverified information or rumors about the suspects’ movements.

Police Maintain “Tactical Silence”

According to Spiegel, police are observing “tactical silence” and have declined to share further details about the suspects’ weapons or their specific demands. The reason, authorities say, is concern that the suspects may be monitoring news coverage from inside the bank — information that could jeopardize the rescue operation.

Sinzig is located in the Ahr Valley, approximately 12 miles from Bonn and 19 miles from Koblenz.
