Sparks reportedly caused by contact between low-voltage power lines operated by the national grid operator, DEDDIE or IPTO, are being blamed for a wildfire that broke out Monday morning at the Kouvaras site, in southeast Attica prefecture, according to preliminary findings by the fire brigade’s arson unit.
The wildfire erupted in a low-vegetation area near the settlement of Agios Stylianos and spread rapidly amid strong winds, prompting the evacuation of the settlement as firefighting forces were reinforced. Two businesses were also reported to have been damaged by the blaze, while an abandoned poultry farm near the reported point of ignition was destroyed.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, three local residents told authorities they saw sparks coming from low-voltage cables on a utility pole near the abandoned poultry farm. The sparks apparently ignited dry grass at the base of the pole, starting the wildfire, which quickly grew under the prevailing winds.
A team from the fire brigade’s arson unit inspected the site and found visible evidence on the pole indicating that a fire had started there. The preliminary assessment is that strong winds caused the cables to swing and come into contact with each other.
The cables are not bundled or twisted together but remain separately suspended, allowing them to come into contact when shaken by strong winds, according to the findings.
The area has been cordoned off and is being guarded. Authorities are expected to seize the utility pole and other relevant materials Tuesday and conduct a forensic inspection to scientifically document the evidence.
The findings will be incorporated into the case file, which will then be forwarded to the competent prosecutor.
The Kouvaras wildfire came as the wider region faced heightened wildfire danger and strong winds, conditions that have contributed to rapid fire spread in several parts of the country this summer. Monday’s response involved reinforced ground and aerial firefighting resources as authorities worked to contain the fire and protect nearby settlements.
