Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has endorsed the Trump administration’s new National Security Strategy, saying it shows the United States now understands what he describes as Europe’s “civilizational-scale decline.”
In a post on X on Thursday, Orban said the strategy—published last week—was “the most important and most interesting document of recent years,” arguing that it correctly identifies Europe’s economic and political vulnerabilities.
The document warned that Europe faces “civilizational erasure” unless it changes course, and signaled that the United States could reassess its relationship with the continent. The shift sparked alarm among many European governments, who were surprised by Washington’s blunt assessment.
Orban, however, welcomed the stance, saying it reflected concerns he has raised for more than a decade. “America has a precise understanding of Europe’s decline,” he wrote. “They see the civilizational-scale decline that we in Hungary have been fighting against for fifteen years. At last, we are not fighting against it alone.”
The Hungarian leader said the strategy recognizes that Europe has reached an “economic dead end” and that its values, democracy and free market are “in danger.” He added that the document also signals Washington’s view that Europe must rebuild its relationship with Russia at a “strategic level.”
Orban has been one of the few EU leaders to maintain strong ties with Moscow since the start of the Ukraine conflict and has frequently criticized EU sanctions on Russia.
His alignment with the Trump administration has brought tangible benefits. Last month, the United States granted Hungary a one-year exemption from U.S. sanctions targeting the use of Russian oil and gas, following a meeting between Orban and President Trump in Washington.
