U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended warm wishes to Cyprus on the occasion of its Independence Day, celebrated annually on October 1. In his statement, Rubio underscored the enduring strength of the relationship between Washington and Nicosia, pointing to deepening cooperation across trade, security, and economic growth.

Commitment to Security and Prosperity

The United States, he noted, views Cyprus as a valuable partner in advancing regional stability and prosperity. Joint efforts between the two nations have expanded commercial ties, strengthened financial oversight against illicit flows, and enhanced collective security in a volatile neighborhood. Washington also expressed particular appreciation for Cyprus’s role in safeguarding American citizens in crisis regions—an area Rubio described as a top priority for the U.S. government.

Support for a Comprehensive Settlement

Beyond economic and security ties, Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s continued commitment to a political resolution of the Cyprus question. The United States remains in favor of a UN-mediated process that would reunite the island under a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, ensuring political equality for all Cypriots.

Cyprus’ Path to Independence

Cyprus celebrates its Independence Day on October 1, marking the island’s emergence as a sovereign state in 1960. The independence process was formalized through the Zurich and London Agreements of 1959, following the armed struggle of EOKA (1955–1959) against British colonial rule.

On August 16, 1960, Britain formally relinquished sovereignty over the island, and the Republic of Cyprus was officially established. Since then, October 1 has been commemorated as the nation’s day of independence.
