The excellent level and strategic nature of Cyprus-US relations were reaffirmed during a meeting held in Washington on Monday between visiting Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to Nicosia, the two officials discussed, among others, ways in which the Republic of Cyprus can contribute to the US President Donald Trump’s plan for peace, humanitarian assistance and reconstruction in Gaza, Cyprus’ foreign ministry said in a press release.
“We covered a large number of issues, bilateral but also those concerning our region, such as Gaza and Syria,” Kombos said after the meeting, while emphasizing that Cyprus has proven that it is able to offer complementary contributions to both the US’s humanitarian plan but also to reconstruction efforts in the war-ravaged Palestinian enclave.
The talks also included, as expected, the Cyprus problem, with Kombos saying that a solution to the Cyprus problem is important for Washington, as it impacted regional stability, as “what is happening in Cyprus affects American plans more broadly.”
As part of their meeting, Rubio and Kombos also discussed the’3+1′ framework, established in 2019, which comprises the United States, Greece, Israel and Cyprus.
“The 3+1 format at the leadership level was also raised, with Mr. Rubio representing the US, as well as energy cooperation, given the presence of US companies in the Cypriot EEZ and, more broadly, in the Greek EEZ,” Kombos said.
On its part, the State Department issued an announcement noting that “…Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Republic of Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos today and discussed advancing transatlantic cooperation during the Republic of Cyprus’s January – June 2026 EU Council Presidency. The Secretary thanked Cyprus for its support in promoting regional security and providing humanitarian aid to Gaza. The leaders also discussed opportunities to expand energy security and cooperation.”
