Ever deepening Greece-US cooperation in the strategic energy sector again dominated a meeting in Washington D.C. between Athens’ visiting energy minister Stavros Papastavrou and two top Trump administration officials, US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and the US Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum.
The meeting in the US capital on Wednesday came on the sidelines of the Transatlantic Conference in Washington on natural gas security, and included participation by the Greek ambassador to America, Antonis Alexandridis, and the US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle
Speaking after the meeting, Papastavrou again cited talks over the so-called “vertical corridor” project, which aims to supply US-produced LNG offloaded to terminals in Greece and shipped northwards by pipeline to southeast and east European markets. He also described the country as a “reliable hub for energy security”.
Papastavrou said the next phase of Athens’ energy strategy is to exploit any potential natural gas finds, with the aim of strengthening the Greek economy and contributing to European energy sufficiency.
