Nick Reiner, 32, the younger son of Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing deaths of his parents. The couple, aged 78 and 70 respectively, were found slain at their Brentwood, Los Angeles home over the weekend.
Authorities said Nick Reiner was arrested on Sunday night at a downtown Los Angeles park near the University of Southern California campus, hours after police discovered the bodies. He has remained in custody without bond since the arrest.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a five-page criminal complaint containing two counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors said the charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole or capital punishment, though a decision on whether to pursue the death penalty has not yet been made.
“Their loss is beyond tragic,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said as reported in Reuters. “We will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice.” Details regarding the motive and the murder weapon have not been released, though autopsies will determine the precise cause and circumstances of death. Reports suggest that Nick Reiner had a heated argument with his parents the night before the killings at a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien.
Nick Reiner has publicly acknowledged a long history of substance abuse and periods of homelessness. He has been in rehabilitation since his teens, experiences that inspired the film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote with his father. His attorney, Alan Jackson, said Nick had yet to be medically cleared for his initial court appearance but could be arraigned soon.
Rob Reiner, a celebrated actor and director, was best known for his role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family and for directing iconic films such as The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, and A Few Good Men. His wife, Michele Reiner, was a photographer who once captured the image of Donald Trump featured on the cover of Trump: The Art of the Deal.
The Reiners’ deaths have shocked Hollywood and sparked comparisons to some of the city’s most infamous celebrity murders, including the 1994 killing of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. As the case unfolds, authorities continue to investigate, with the legal community closely watching how the proceedings against Nick Reiner will proceed.
