Inclement weather in northwest Greece, covering much of mountainous Epirus province, generated a civil protection warning on Wednesday for flooding due to river overflows and mountain landslides. The warning (the 112 alert) was issued by SMS to users’ mobile phones.
Among others, a plane headed to Ioannina from Athens was ordered to return to the Eleftherios Venizelos Airport due to a severe storm battering the Ioannina airport.
The same wider region, especially the Tzoumerka mountain range, has recorded significant rainfall over the past two months, as has the western Greece seaboard.
