Significant rainfall over the past few months recorded in mountainous northwest Greece’s Epirus province, especially in the highlands of Arta prefecture along the Tzoumerka mountain range, have caused widespread landslides of late.
One village in particular, Mikrospilia (literally “small cave” in Greek), has seen several residences threatened with their complete disappearance as the soil is giving way.
According to reports, the situation is worsening day by day and residents are concerned, with some telling local media of sounds coming from underground. The ground subsidence has so far destroyed properties and fields.
Local officials said a team of geologists is expected to arrive on Tuesday to examine the phenomenon.
Large cracks in the ground as long as 600 meters have formed, with one landslide measured at more than 200 meters.
