Widespread flooding due to overflowing rivers and streams from three days of heavy rainfall again plagued central Greece’s Thessaly plain on Saturday, although clearing skies provide hope for normalization over the next 24 hours.

Hellenic Train, the private rail operator, on Saturday announced that rail service between the Larissa and Leianokladi stations has been suspended due to the Enipeas River overflowing its banks.

Flooding was reported near the town of Farsala, in the southern Thessaly plain, due to the same overflowing, as was the case with the larger Pineios River that passes through Larissa.

The latest weather front to pass through much of Greece, dubbed “Byron”, as per the recent trend of naming storms, heaped torrential rains on mainland and islands, with the first lasting snowfall reported in several northern Greece peaks. The greater Athens-Piraeus area bore much of the brunt of the storm on Thursday and Friday.

On a positive note, the large amount of precipitation was a welcome development amid the specter of summertime water shortages in parts of the country and some islands.
