The debut feature film by Konstantina Kotzamani, Titanic Ocean, is set to premiere in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival (12-13 May) marking a significant milestone for the acclaimed Greek filmmaker.
Kotzamani continues her strong presence on the international festival circuit, following a series of celebrated short films that have screened at major events worldwide. Her previous works include What Mary Didn’t Know (Locarno 2024), Electric Swan (Venice 2019), Limbo (Cannes Critics’ Week 2016), Washingtonia (Berlin International Film Festival Competition 2014), and Yellow Fieber (Locarno Competition 2015).
A co-production between Greece, Germany, Romania, Spain, and Japan, Titanic Ocean joins this year’s Un Certain Regard lineup—a section renowned for spotlighting daring cinematic voices and films that challenge narrative conventions while pushing the boundaries of storytelling.
Synopsis
Seventeen-year-old Akame dreams of becoming a mermaid. Navigating the fiercely competitive environment of her training school and the mesmerizing underwater world of aquariums, she learns to hold her breath under the gaze of thousands, swimming alongside real sharks.
Caught between breathless endurance and demanding choreography, Akame experiences her first love and begins to unlock her hidden voice—powerful as that of a mythical siren. In doing so, her pursuit of success transforms into a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and metamorphosis.
