On this day, 2 December 1923, in Manhattan, New York, the daughter of Greek immigrants was born: Maria Anna Cecilia Sophia Kalogeropoulos—known worldwide as Maria Callas, the defining soprano of the 20th century.

From her early training in Athens to her meteoric rise on the world’s great opera stages, Callas reshaped the art form. Her unmistakable voice, intense dramatic presence and fearless interpretive choices revived the expressive power and theatricality of opera, earning her the enduring title “La Divina.”

In 2025, Athens’ Maria Callas Museum marks her birthday with two special events that invite the public to explore her life, her work and the legacy that continues to inspire new generations.

Monica Bellucci Returns to Athens for Callas Tribute

Press Conference about the upcoming play `Maria Callas, Letters and Memories`, in Athens, on Sep.19, 2021.

Adding to this year’s celebrations, Monica Bellucci returns to Athens on 5 December for a screening of Maria Callas – Monica Bellucci: An Encounter.

The hybrid documentary—directed by Yannis Dimolitsas and Tom Volf—grew out of the international tour of Maria Callas – Letters and Memoirs (2019–2023). The film places two eras side by side: Bellucci’s contemporary journey as she gives voice to Callas’s personal writings, and the period when the Greek soprano reached the height of her artistic power.

Bellucci will appear in person at the event, held at Pallas Theater at 8 p.m., Friday 5 December, which will include an open audience discussion. A limited number of tickets remain available.
