Greek Economy and Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis broke down the tax breaks announced two days earlier by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his state-of-the-economy address in Thessaloniki, with the ministry on Monday publishing the new tax scales – effective as of 2026 – along with examples.
According to Pierrakakis and the ministry, the entire tax break package is worth 2.7 billion euros for 2026, of which 925 million euros relates to the cost of measures that have been announced and 1.76 billion euros for new measures.
In addition, some of the new measures (tax scale reductions, non-offsetting of the so-called “personal difference” for pensioners, introduction of an intermediate rate for incomes derived from leasing, abolition of the property tax for remote areas, along with tax exemption for charitable foundations) have an additional impact for 2027 of approximately 700 million euros.
Examples given by the ministry include the following:
– A 25-year-old working in the food and beverage sector with a net monthly salary of 1,250 euros will see an annual tax reduction of 2,480 euros, equivalent to almost two months’ salary.
– A taxpayer with several dependents (a multi-children family) and a monthly net salary of 1,800 euros, will see an annual tax reduction of 4,100 euros, equivalent to nearly 2.3 salaries.
– A 30-year-old self-employed taxpayer with no dependents and an annual taxable income of 20,000 euros will see a tax reduction of 1,300 euros annually.
– A salaried employee with two dependents and an annual taxable income of 30,000 euros (1,776 net, monthly) will see a tax reduction of 1,200 on an annual basis, equivalent to two-thirds of one monthly salary.
– A parent with three dependents with a net monthly salary of 1,291 euros will see a tax reduction of 1,300 euros.
– A company employee with no dependents and a taxable annual income of 50,000 euros will see a tax reduction of 1,100 euros.
