The signing of an extensive defense agreement in Tel Aviv on Monday, 31 August 2026, between Greece and Israel, called “Achilles Shield,” is the culmination of three years of extensive negotiations.

When fully operational, the “Achilles Shield” promises to provide Greece with a multilayered defense system against aerial, drone and ballistic threats.

According to the plan outlined by Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, the Achilles Shield is expected to achieve full operational deployment within 35 months.

In an extremely volatile Eastern Mediterranean region, with tensions rising, as Turkey continues to ramp up its rhetoric, levelling threats against Greece, while also being at loggerheads with Israel over Syria and Gaza, Greece is compelled to seek alliances to fortify its defenses.

The huge deal includes a series of high-tech military assets and equipment, expected to be incorporated into the Greek defense system.

Under the program — which is highly significant for Israel’s defense industry and ranks among the largest defense deals in the country’s history — Israel’s Ministry of Defense will supply an integrated defense system designed to counter a broad range of threats, from ballistic missiles and aerial threats to hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The “Achilles’ Shield” package specifically includes:
• David’s Sling, developed by Israel’s Missile Defense Organization under the Ministry’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D), with Rafael as the prime contractor
• Barak MX, built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)
• SPYDER, built by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems
• Multi-Mission Radars (MMR) for aerial surveillance, manufactured by ELTA Systems, an IAI subsidiary
• A new national command-and-control system that will integrate the full range of air defense capabilities, to be developed by Rafael.

A supplementary agreement worth €26 million was also signed for the sale of Rafael’s Drone Dome systems, intended to defend strategic sites against UAVs and drones and to reinforce existing defense systems.
