Dendias Marks 66 Years of Cyprus Independence

Greece’s defense minister honored Cypriots who fought for freedom and reaffirmed Athens’ support for the reunification of the island and a just and sustainable solution based on UN resolutions and EU principles

Greece marked the 66th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus on Thursday, with Defense Minister Nikos Dendias honoring the struggles of Cypriots for freedom and the sacrifices of those who fought for the island.

“Sixty-six years since the independence of the Republic of Cyprus. We honor the struggles of our Cypriot brothers and sisters for freedom and the sacrifice of the heroes of Hellenism on the Great Island,” Dendias said in a post on X.

“Greece remains steadfastly at the side of the Republic of Cyprus. As has been proven, Cyprus is not far away,” Dendias added.

The Greek Foreign Ministry also extended its congratulations and best wishes to the people and government of the Republic of Cyprus on the 66th anniversary of the declaration of independence.

“Greece remains steadfastly at the side of Cyprus, with the goal of reunifying the island and finding a just and sustainable solution based on the decisions of the United Nations Security Council and in accordance with the EU acquis and the principles and values of the European Union,” the ministry said in a post on X.

The Republic of Cyprus gained independence in 1960, following the end of British colonial rule. The anniversary is marked annually on October 1.
