Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, speaking from the border region of Thrace, outlined an extensive defense modernization program on Tuesday, confirming that Greece is not merely maintaining but accelerating the military reinforcement of its islands, with a target date of 2030.
The choice of Thrace for the announcement was deliberate. Inspecting key military installations in Didymoteicho, Alexandroupoli and Xanthi, the Greek Defense minister signaled the armed forces’ next phase — a direct response to recent demands by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has repeatedly raised the demilitarization of the eastern Aegean islands, calling on Greece to “abandon the wrong path.”
Greece’s response is being delivered through infrastructure. Under the “Agenda 2030” reform program, Athens is asserting that its sovereign right to self-defense, enshrined in Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, is non-negotiable, in response to what it describes as an existing threat and the deployment of Turkish forces along the Asia Minor coast.
At the center of the new strategy is a fortification program comprising 522 projects, extending beyond front-line defense positions in the Evros region and the islands to critical rear-support locations.
Eight specialized units producing prefabricated reinforced-concrete components are already operating to accelerate the plan, including the 316th Engineering Unit in Xanthi, which manufactures high-durability interlocking blocks transported directly to reinforce combat positions and protect military personnel.
The ministry has also linked the defense buildup to a housing program for military personnel, with initial phases focused on Evros and the islands to improve living conditions for troops stationed along the border.
