Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted key European and regional priorities after meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa. Speaking to reporters, Mitsotakis stressed Greece’s firm position on the participation of third countries in the European Union’s new defense initiative, signaling that nations threatening EU members cannot take part.

Support for Poland and Ukraine

Mitsotakis expressed solidarity with Poland, citing recent violations of its airspace, and reaffirmed Greece’s support for coordinated EU and US efforts to end the war in Ukraine through peace negotiations. “A discussion must include Ukraine, respect international law, uphold the inviolability of borders, and provide necessary security guarantees,” he said.

Middle East concerns

The Prime Minister also addressed developments in the Middle East, voicing concern over territorial violations in Qatar and potential escalation in Gaza. Greece continues to provide humanitarian assistance, including aid drops, and backs ongoing ceasefire negotiations led by the US, Qatar, and Egypt.

European defense and strategic autonomy

Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of a unified European defense approach and strategic autonomy. He advocated for a European financing mechanism to support shared defense projects, such as missile defense, and reiterated that Greece’s position on third-country participation in EU defense initiatives is clear.

Migration and border security

On migration, Mitsotakis noted recent arrivals in Crete and stressed the need for stronger coordination and protection of EU external borders to combat trafficking networks.

EU budget and competitiveness

Looking ahead to the next multiannual EU budget, the Prime Minister described Greece’s approach as strategic and goal-oriented, aiming for agreement by the end of 2026. He highlighted the importance of a common energy market to ensure fair prices across member states and noted ongoing challenges in implementing EU-wide banking and energy policies.

Innovation and artificial intelligence

Mitsotakis also discussed the need to reform EU regulations to enable startups and small enterprises in the tech sector to operate across Europe, noting the gap between EU ambitions and available financial tools. He called for dedicated funding for defense and security initiatives and stressed that bold actions are necessary to meet Europe’s strategic challenges.

“The goal is a strong Europe that serves all Europeans,” Mitsotakis concluded, emphasizing the importance of translating ambitious studies and proposals into practical policies rather than leaving them on paper.
