Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will not attend this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, as adverse weather conditions prompted a last-minute adjustment to his schedule, Greek government officials said on Thursday.

Instead, Mitsotakis is set to depart after midday for Brussels to take part in an informal and extraordinary meeting of European Union leaders, which includes a working dinner of the European Council. The change was attributed to disruptions caused by severe weather affecting flight operations at a military airport near Athens, which is often used for official travel.

Earlier in the day, at 10:30 a.m. local time, the prime minister chaired a meeting at the prime minister’s office focused on an outbreak of animal pox and the biosecurity measures being implemented to contain the disease. The meeting was part of the government’s broader effort to address public health and agricultural risks linked to the livestock sector.

Government sources explained that the decision to cancel the trip to Davos had been communicated since Wednesday, as weather conditions made the original travel plan impractical. The priority, officials said, was to ensure the prime minister’s participation in the EU leaders’ meeting in Brussels, where current European challenges are expected to be discussed.
