The Greek minister praised the two countries’ historic connections and current strategic partnership during an event marking the anniversary of the French Revolution

Greek Shipping and Island Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias highlighted the long-standing relationship between Greece and France during a reception marking 237 years since the French Revolution.

Speaking at the event, Kikilias referred to the “real and sincere ties” between the two countries, emphasizing their shared history and strong strategic cooperation.

In a post on the social media platform X, Kikilias said Greece and France had “written golden pages of common history,” pointing to the influence of ancient Greek democracy and culture on the French Enlightenment and Revolution, as well as France’s role in supporting the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

He also highlighted recent examples of cooperation between the two countries, including high-level political contacts and joint positions on European unity.

Kikilias referred to the strategic partnership between Athens and Paris today, as well as cooperation in areas including civil protection, climate change and shipping. He noted that Greece’s maritime sector, which he described as having the world’s largest fleet, and France were working together on challenges affecting European citizens.

The minister also thanked French Ambassador Laurence Auer for her invitation to the reception and praised her work during her term in Greece.
