Μake us preferred on Google Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the final abolition of reductions introduced under the so-called Katrougalos law on survivor pensions, saying the process will be completed by Friday.
In a social media post, Mitsotakis said 8,500 beneficiaries will see significant increases in their survivor pensions, in some cases restoring payments to the levels that existed before the cuts.
“On July 3, I announced the legislation for the final abolition of the Katrougalos cuts to survivor pensions. From today through Friday, the payment of the new pensions will have been completed,” Mitsotakis said.
“A total of 8,500 beneficiaries will see their pensions increase significantly, even to the levels they were at before the cuts they suffered.”
Thousands to receive higher pensions
The changes concern survivor pensions, which are paid to eligible family members following the death of a pension recipient.
Mitsotakis said the revised payments will be completed between the day of his announcement and Friday, with the increases affecting 8,500 beneficiaries.
He also said that approximately 75,000 pensioners will not have to return any money previously paid to them retroactively.
In addition, 122,000 pensioners who receive two national pensions will continue to receive both, according to the prime minister.
Government calls change a correction of injustice
Mitsotakis described the measure as a permanent solution to an issue that had affected thousands of families.
“A problem, therefore, that concerned thousands of families is now being resolved permanently, restoring a major social injustice,” he said.
“The legislation was announced, and we are implementing it.”
