Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to travel to Germany on January 9, where he will address senior members of the country’s ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at the party’s annual event. Mitsotakis is attending as a guest of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, underscoring the close political dialogue between Athens and Berlin.
According to information released by Greek officials, the CDU Executive Committee meeting will take place in the city of Mainz. The visit by the Greek prime minister is expected to be brief and focused, lasting only a few hours. During his stay, Mitsotakis will first hold a meeting with Chancellor Merz before delivering a speech to leading figures of the CDU.
His address is expected to focus on the Greek economy, an area in which the German chancellor has repeatedly praised the performance and policy direction of the Greek government in recent years. Sources in Athens note that this positive assessment was a key reason behind the invitation for Mitsotakis to speak directly to the party’s leadership.
Later the same day, Mitsotakis is also expected to attend the CDU’s traditional New Year’s reception, marking a high-profile conclusion to his visit.
