US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle on Tuesday described the northern port city of Alexandroupolis as an area of “vital and strategic importance” for the United States, during a visit focused on defense and energy cooperation.
Guilfoyle arrived in the Evros prefecture’s capital shortly before noon and visited the 12th mechanized infantry division before emphasizing the border city’s growing role in US-Greek and NATO logistics operations.
She said Alexandroupolis remained a key hub for bilateral relations and NATO cooperation, particularly in military logistics and energy security, adding that Washington aimed to further strengthen collaboration in those areas. The US ambassador also praised Athens for its longstanding support of the alliance and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to maintaining close ties with Greece.
Alexandroupoli has become increasingly significant for NATO and U.S. strategic planning in southeastern Europe due to its port, rail links and proximity to the Black Sea region. The city has been used in recent years as a transit hub for military equipment and energy infrastructure projects aimed at reducing European dependence on Russian energy supplies.
Over the past two months, Guilfoyle’s public appearances have focused on deepening defense, shipping and energy ties between Washington and Athens, amid heightened regional instability and continued war in Ukraine.
