The Greek government is examining a potential ban on full-face religious garments, commonly referred to as the burka, according to Thanos Plevris, the Minister for Migration and Asylum.
Speaking in the Hellenic Parliament, Plevris confirmed that discussions have begun to review regulations specifically related to migration, asylum, and related institutional structures.
He noted that while such cases are relatively rare, some individuals are compelled to wear full-face garments, often due to social or cultural pressures, making them vulnerable to targeting or discrimination.
Plevris also referenced decisions by the European Court of Justice, which recognize that member states have the authority to examine circumstances involving full-face coverings. He emphasized that the government is conducting a comprehensive review and expects to clarify its official position in the near future.
