A Greek robotics team from the port city of Volos in Thessaly secured first prize in an international robotics competition in Beijing, China.
Competing in the “Linefollow 18+” category, the ATOM Robotics Team of Volos, consisting of a group of young Greek studens, was awarded top accolades after besting top teams from around the world.
The distinction becomes even more noteworthy considering it was achieved against 400 teams representing much more technologically advanced countries.
As the students of the Greek team stated, their team managed to overcome the tough competition by focusing their efforts on successfully completing the tasks at hand in a reliable way.
Meanwhile, a second Greek team, also from Volos, called the “Educational Club of Volos,” won 4th place in the “SumoRobots 18+” category, proving that Greek youth can compete at the highest level against countries investing much more in the robotics industry.
The RoboRave International is a robotics education program to teach students and teachers how to design, build, program, and test robots to perform a variety of tasks.
Special mention goes to the University of Thessaly, whose team RobotHeads won third place in the firefighting category, adding another notable distinction for the city and the academic community.
The return of the students to Greece was accompanied by a message that innovation, collaboration, and confidence in the abilities of young people can pave the way to international success—even with limited resources.
