A tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday in Ano Liosia, a suburb in northwestern Athens, when a 17-year-old girl was killed in a traffic accident on Fylis Avenue.
The crash occurred shortly after 1 a.m. in the direction from Hasia toward Ano Liosia. The car, which was carrying five young people, veered off the road for reasons that remain unknown, hit the curb and then crashed into a streetlight pole.
The impact was severe, leaving the vehicle badly damaged and requiring a Fire Department operation to free the passengers.
Five people were taken to hospitals. The 17-year-old succumbed to her injuries, while three other young people, aged 18 to 22, were injured and remain hospitalized in stable condition.
The causes of the crash are under investigation, with authorities examining the circumstances in which the driver lost control of the vehicle.
According to Greece’s public broadcaster ERT, the young woman died instantly when the vehicle she was traveling in crashed into a streetlight pole at high speed. Signs of the severe impact were visible at the scene.
