A 19-year-old young man has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Venizelio Hospital in Heraklion, Crete, after falling from the city’s historic Venetian walls. He underwent a lengthy surgery for severe injuries to his pelvis and legs and is now in stable condition.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, January 13, 2026, near the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos. The circumstances of the fall remain unclear. Emergency medical services (EKAV) responded promptly, providing first aid at the scene before transporting him to the hospital.

The young man, who resides in Germany, had been staying in a hotel in Heraklion at the time of the accident.

Local authorities are investigating the incident. Police plan to take a statement from the patient once his condition allows and have also informed the German embassy in Athens.
