365 Scholarships, One Powerful Message of Hope

The Hellenic Shipowners' Association awards 365 postgraduate scholarships, empowering a new generation of talented Greeks to pursue their dreams.

In a ceremony filled with symbolism and emotion, the Hellenic Shipowners’ Association honored 365 outstanding young scholars with postgraduate scholarships for studies in Greece and abroad. The initiative marks the Association’s largest scholarship program to date and one of the country’s most significant private contributions to postgraduate education.

Held at the historic Hellenic Naval Academy, a landmark of Greece’s maritime tradition and educational heritage, the event brought together scholarship recipients, their families, shipping industry representatives, and distinguished guests in a celebration of excellence, ambition, and the next generation.

More than 110 shipping companies and members of Greece’s maritime community joined forces to support the program. Their unprecedented collective effort brought to life the vision of Greek Shipowners’ Association President Melina Travlos to award “one scholarship for every day of the year”—365 scholarships in total.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias and Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports Sofia Zacharaki highlighted the importance of cooperation between the shipping industry and the State in strengthening education and expanding opportunities for young people.

Among the most emotional moments of the event were the testimonies of the scholarship recipients themselves, who shared their personal journeys, the challenges they had overcome, and the ambitions that now lie ahead. Their stories reflected a generation equipped with knowledge, values, confidence, and a determination to shape Greece’s future.

In her remarks, Melina Travlos first paid tribute to the families behind each success, emphasizing that every achievement is built on the love, encouragement, and often the sacrifices of parents. “You stood by your children with love and sacrifice. After all, everything begins with the family,” she said, addressing the recipients’ parents.

Travlos noted that the Association’s scholarship ceremony is always defined by optimism because it celebrates young men and women who believe in their dreams and have the courage to pursue them. She also drew attention to the statue of Themistocles standing at the entrance of the Naval Academy and its historic inscription: “We have land and homeland because we have ships at sea.”

She stressed that the true strength of Greek shipping extends far beyond the global leadership of the Greek-owned fleet. Its greatest value, she said, lies in giving back to society by creating opportunities for people—and especially for the younger generation. The 365 scholarships, she added, are a tangible expression of the shipping community’s enduring commitment to its guiding message: “Shipping and society, always together.”
