An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale was recorded at 19.24 (17.24 GMT) in the extreme northwest prefecture of Thesprotia.

According to the Athens-based Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 11 kilometers northeast of the Leptokarya, Thesprotia site, while the focal depth is estimated at five kilometers.

The tremor comes five days after an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck the same region last Sunday, shaking communities across the wider Epirus province.

The epicenter for the previous quake was located 12 kilometers east of the village of Leptokarya, and the focal depth was measured at 12.9 kilometers.

Authorities later declared a state of emergency in several municipalities in the Epirus province on March 8.
