74 Arrests in Wildfire Crackdown Since Start of Year

Authorities have made 74 arrests linked to wildfire incidents since the start of 2026, as officials intensify enforcement efforts amid rising fire activity across the country

Greek authorities have carried out 74 arrests between January 1 and June 8, 2026, under the country’s expedited legal procedure for wildfire-related offenses, according to an update from the Fire Service.

Among those arrested was a 71-year-old foreign national in Perachora, Corinthia, on Monday. He is alleged to have sparked a fire while carrying out vegetation-clearing work without implementing the required fire safety measures. Authorities imposed an administrative fine of €5,821.87.

According to the Fire Service, 68 of the 74 arrests (91.89%) involved cases of negligence, while six arrests (8.11%) were related to intentional acts.

During the same period, authorities issued 404 administrative fines totaling €391,093.93.

The Fire Service stated that its investigative units continue to carry out inspections and move swiftly to impose the administrative and criminal penalties provided for by law whenever violations are identified.

Increased Wildfire Activity in the Last 24 Hours

A total of 33 agricultural and forest fires broke out across Greece during the past 24 hours.

Of these, 30 were brought under control quickly while still in their initial stages, while firefighting forces remain actively engaged in operations involving three additional fires.

Local investigative offices and specialized teams from the Arson Crimes Division (DAEE) are examining the causes of the fires, with the aim of fully clarifying each case.

The Fire Service is urging citizens to exercise extreme caution and, in the event of a wildfire, to strictly follow the instructions of the competent authorities in order to protect their personal safety and the environment.
