The mayor of Antiparos, Anastasios Faroupos, died in a traffic accident on the small Cycladic island, according to local authorities.

According to reports, Faroupos was riding a motorcycle alone when he lost control under undetermined circumstances. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash and died at the scene.

Initial information indicated that no other vehicle was involved.

A forensic examination and autopsy are scheduled to take place in Athens to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatality.

Faroupos was a prominent figure in local government on Antiparos and served the island for many years. He was elected mayor in three consecutive municipal elections, in 2014, 2019 and 2023.

Born on Antiparos in 1965, he graduated from a high school in nearby Paros in 1982 before studying accounting in Heraklion, graduating in 1987.

He was married and had three children.

Antiparos is a small Cycladic island in the southern Aegean, located just west of Paros and separated from it by a narrow channel.
