Greece is heading into a three-day spell of hazy and unsettled weather, as African dust and scattered showers spread across the country during the annual 17 November Polytechnic march. Temperatures will rise in most regions, but conditions will vary widely between north and south.
On Monday, 17 November, clouds will cover much of Greece, accompanied by increased concentrations of African dust. Light, brief showers are expected through midday in Thrace and the eastern Aegean islands. Rain will develop later in the day in the northern Ionian Sea, Epirus and western mainland areas, with local thunderstorms possible by evening, especially in the northwest.
Temperatures will climb to around 20°C in northern regions, 22–23°C in the west, and up to 24°C in the east and south, including Crete. Southerly winds will dominate the seas at 4–6 Beaufort, strengthening to 7 in parts of the Ionian and northern Aegean.
In Athens, thin but persistent cloud cover is expected, becoming thicker in the morning and evening. Temperatures will range from 13–22°C, with southerly winds intensifying to 6–7 Beaufort. Thessaloniki will see overcast skies and mild conditions, with temperatures between 11–19°C and light, shifting winds.
Weather patterns for the following days will remain similar
Tuesday will bring widespread cloud and ongoing dust transport, with rain in western and northern areas and isolated storms around the northern Ionian and Epirus. Temperatures will stay elevated, reaching 20–25°C depending on the region, while southerly winds will strengthen further—up to 8 Beaufort in parts of the northern Aegean.
Wednesday will continue the trend with thick cloud, dust and strong southerly winds. Local rain is likely in western and northern regions, along with occasional storms in the northwest. Temperatures will remain steady at 21–24°C.
Thursday will see increasing clouds in the west, north and eastern Aegean, with scattered showers and a chance of thunderstorms in the Ionian. Elsewhere, clouds will be more intermittent. Winds will continue from the south at 4–6 Beaufort, and temperatures will hold at similar levels.
