Self-tests for alcohol consumption are now available in pharmacies in Greece, according to press reports this week.

The specific tests, which have been widely available in the United States, Britain and in numerous other European Union countries, allow users to test themselves to ascertain whether they are fit to drive safely and operate machinery.

A self-test package of two tests costs between five to seven euros and is regarded as simple to use, a pharmacist told a reporter of the state-run broadcaster in a segment aired this week.

“There is a reagent in the center of the tube. You press both ends to release it and blow continuously for 10 seconds. Repeat once more. Depending on the color change of the crystals inside, you can see if you have consumed an amount of alcohol that puts you over the limit,” was the explanation given.

The scale has four indicators:

0: Negative (white)

0.2: Low amount

0.5: High

0.8: Very high indication (red)
