A 58-year-old Polish national accused of espionage for activity next to the strategic Souda Bay naval base is set to appear before an investigating judge on Monday, as Greek authorities continue to examine the case as a matter of national security.
The suspect was brought before a prosecutor, who filed formal charges of espionage. According to reports, the man is a Polish citizen and a former military serviceman.
Investigators say the suspect had been visiting the Souda Bay area regularly over the past three years, staying in a camper van parked at a location overlooking the bay. During the winter months he reportedly remained at the same spot, typically leaving Crete in early May and returning the following year.
The suspect is currently being questioned by intelligence service investigators. He has denied the accusations. Authorities were alerted to his presence after a tip-off from a local citizen.
Investigators are examining the suspect’s mobile phone after discovering files that may be connected to the alleged activity.

Photos of Military Facilities
According to preliminary findings, photos discovered on the suspect’s phone include images of the base’s pier and warships sailing in the surrounding waters. Authorities believe the files may have been sent to a recipient in Poland.
In offering an explanation, the man said he sent the photos to his sister because her husband is a military officer and has a strong interest in naval vessels.
Second Case in Recent Weeks
The incident is the second alleged espionage case linked to the Souda Bay area within a short period. Earlier this month, a Georgian national was arrested in connection with a similar investigation near the naval facility.
The Souda Bay Naval Base is one of the most strategically important military installations in the eastern Mediterranean, serving both the Greek armed forces and allied NATO operations.
