Athens commuters and visitors should prepare for early evening metro station closures starting Monday, Feb. 23, as upgrade works move into a new phase on Line 2 of the Athens Metro.
According to STASY, the operator of the Athens Metro, the project to replace rails and install a 5G network is entering its fourth phase. Work will focus on the Syngrou-Fix–Syntagma section, with temporary traffic arrangements in place during nighttime hours.
Which Athens Metro stations will close early?
Beginning Monday, Feb. 23, Syntagma (Line 2 platforms only), Acropoli and Syngrou-Fix stations will close at 9:40 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday — about 2.5 hours earlier than usual.
Syntagma station will remain open for Line 3 services, which operate between Dimotiko Theatro, Doukissis Plakentias and Athens International Airport.
On Sunday, Feb. 22, Line 2 services will operate normally throughout the day and evening, with no early closure.
How Line 2 service will operate
During work hours, Line 2 trains will run in two separate sections: from Anthoupoli to Panepistimio and from Neos Kosmos to Elliniko. Passengers traveling through central Athens on Line 2 during late evening hours will need to use alternative transport between Panepistimio and Neos Kosmos.

Shuttle bus X15 to connect central stations
To serve passengers between Panepistimio and Agios Ioannis, the Athens public transport authority will introduce a temporary express bus line, X15, operating Sunday through Thursday from 9:40 p.m. until the end of metro service.

STASY acknowledged that the traffic measures may inconvenience passengers but said they are necessary to complete “important projects that will contribute to improving daily transportation.”
