A 62-year-old Belgian tourist suffered serious facial injuries after losing his footing and falling while attempting to take a photograph from the top of a cliff on the Ionian Island of Lefkada on Thursday, authorities said.
The accident occurred near the village of Karya, where the man reportedly approached the edge of a rocky viewpoint to take a selfie. According to local reports, he lost his balance and fell onto rocks below, sustaining extensive injuries to his face.
Emergency services responded to the scene and transported the tourist to Lefkada (Lefkas) general hospital, where medical staff stabilized his condition.
Medical assessments indicated that he may need to be transferred to a specialized hospital in Athens for a series of reconstructive surgical procedures.
The incident is the latest in a series of accidents involving foreign visitors at popular tourist destinations across Greece in recent months. Authorities have repeatedly urged tourists to exercise caution near cliffs, coastal viewpoints and remote hiking routes, particularly during the peak summer season when visitor numbers increase sharply. Several recent incidents reported around the country have involved travelers suffering serious injuries or requiring rescue operations after falls, heat-related emergencies or accidents while visiting scenic but potentially hazardous locations.
Lefkada, known for its dramatic coastline and elevated viewpoints overlooking the Ionian Sea, attracts thousands of visitors each year, particularly during the summer tourism season.
