A major crimes investigation was underway on Saturday after an early morning explosion outside the residence of a corrections officer in the upper Thessaloniki-area district of Sykies.
Authorities estimate that the perpetrator or perpetrators left a make-shift bomb comprised of three kilos of explosive materials beneath the building where the man lives with his family.
Initial reports point to a simple construction ignited by a readily available detonator.
Police officers were canvassing the area after daybreak to seek police video footage of the attack, as a hole was first dug in the building’s covered parking lot and next to the elevator shaft in order to place the bomb inside.
The ground-floor level of the apartment building sustained significant damage. Additionally, two local residents sustained minor injuries, mostly from glass shards.
As expected, the corrections officer is being questioned as to whether he’s received threats over the recent period.
In a later development several hours, police raided several cells at the Thessaloniki-area Diavata Prison, something deemed as related to the incident.
