Chalkidiki: Man Caught Dumping Waste Illegally

Police say illegal dumping caused pollution and environmental damage at two sites in Chalkidiki

A 59-year-old man was caught red-handed in Chalkidiki after allegedly turning two sites, in Vergia and Nea Silata, into makeshift dumps by illegally depositing construction rubble and mixed solid waste.

Officers from Thessaloniki’s Environmental Protection Department spotted him Wednesday morning using machinery to load part of the waste from one location onto a truck belonging to his company, then dumping it on a fenced plot of land.

The same plot was found to contain mixed solid waste, including wood, mattresses, plastics and old furniture, that appeared to have been dumped there over the previous 24 hours. According to the investigation, the man had reportedly been depositing waste at the two sites gradually since October 2025, without holding the required environmental permit.

Police said the illegal dumping caused pollution and environmental degradation. The suspect has been referred to the competent prosecutor.
