Tensions flared in Athens on Tuesday evening (October 7) as clashes broke out outside the Israeli Embassy, following a large demonstratiogenfgggn in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

According to reports, riot police used tear gas and flash grenades to disperse protesters after a march marking two years since the outbreak of the Israel–Hamas war reached the embassy. Authorities temporarily halted traffic on Kifisias Avenue, one of the capital’s main thoroughfares, as police attempted to push back the crowd.

Earlier in the day, mass demonstrations took place in both Athens and Thessaloniki, with thousands marching under the slogan “Freedom for Palestine.” Protesters called for an end to what they described as genocide, the lifting of the Gaza blockade, and international isolation of Israel.

The march in Athens began at Eleftherias Park and moved toward the Israeli Embassy, with participants waving Palestinian flags and chanting pro-Palestinian slogans. The protest drew people of all ages and backgrounds, reflecting broad public engagement.

A strong police presence was also reported near the U.S. Embassy, amid concerns of potential unrest.

Despite earlier peaceful demonstrations, the evening ended in violent confrontations near the Israeli Embassy, highlighting the deep emotions surrounding the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
