A tragic accident claimed the life of a 53-year-old Coast Guard officer in Astros Kynourias, Greece, while he was performing his duties at the local marina.
The officer, holding the rank of ensign, was on foot patrol alongside the local station commander. They were assisting with securing boats and clearing the area during rough weather when a wave over five meters high swept him into the sea. He suffered a fatal head injury, reportedly from impact with a boat or rocks. Winds at the time were reported at 9–10 Beaufort, intensifying the dangerous conditions.

The deceased officer leaves behind his spouse, parents, siblings, and a 9-year-old child. His funeral will be held on Friday, January 23, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Hypapanti in Prastos, Agios Andreas, with the body arriving at the church an hour earlier.

The storm that caused the accident also inflicted significant damage on the marina. Large rocks were displaced, fragments reached the nearby open-air theater, and parts of the harbor structure were broken or dislodged, underscoring the severity of the conditions during the incident.
Authorities continue to remind residents and visitors in the area to exercise extreme caution near the coast as the region recovers from the storm’s impact.
