Greek authorities have dismantled a female-led criminal group responsible for a string of ATM thefts and fraud schemes aimed at elderly women in the wider Athens area. The investigation revealed 74 separate incidents, with total losses exceeding €120,000.
How the Scam Worked
The group’s method was both calculated and consistent. Operating mainly during morning and midday hours—when banks tend to be busiest—the women would identify elderly female targets at ATMs. Carefully watching as their victims entered their PINs, they would then discreetly follow them, sometimes even boarding the same buses or entering nearby supermarkets.
Once a distraction or vulnerable moment presented itself, the perpetrators would snatch their victims’ wallets, quickly using the stolen cards to withdraw cash or make purchases before the theft could be reported or the cards canceled.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Three women aged 26, 29, and 32 were arrested in the neighborhoods of Cholargos and Agios Panteleimonas. Police say all three have prior records for similar offenses. An additional nine individuals believed to be part of the ring have been identified and are now wanted by authorities.
Video footage released by Greek police shows the group in action, offering a chilling glimpse into the ease and speed with which these crimes were committed.
