Daily Alcohol Checks Cause Traffic Jams in Central Athens

Athens police now conduct daily, large-scale alcohol tests on key roads, extending beyond weekends. The operations aim to enforce zero tolerance for drunk driving, though they occasionally cause significant traffic congestion

Athens police have intensified their efforts against drunk driving, conducting large-scale alcohol tests on central city roads daily, not just on traditional high-risk weekends. The move aims to enforce a strict zero-tolerance policy, sending a clear message to drivers.

A notable operation took place on Wednesday evening along Stadiou Street, near the Old Parliament building. Over ten officers from the Traffic Police and the Accident Prevention and Control Teams set up an extensive checkpoint. Traffic cones redirected vehicles into a designated lane for alcohol testing, causing bottlenecks that, at times, stretched to Klafthmonos Square.

The checkpoint was strategically organized in two locations: one team monitored vehicles coming from Amerikis Street, while the second focused on cars entering from Kolokotroni Street. Inspections continued late into the night, contributing to traffic congestion.

Recent Enforcement Results

Earlier in March, Athens police conducted a five-day campaign across the Attica region, carrying out 36,725 alcohol tests. Authorities recorded 270 violations, with 12 drivers arrested and taken to court for exceeding the 0.60 mg/l alcohol limit.
