Powerful north winds hitting the central and eastern Aegean, gusting up to 9 on the Beaufort scale, have caused major disruptions to ferry service, forcing cancellations and a sailing ban out of the port of Rafina bound for the Cyclades.
What’s happening at Rafina
Once the ban took effect Thursday afternoon, no further departures from Rafina to the Cyclades were allowed, aside from ships that had already left port before the measure kicked in. Among the canceled routes was the “Theologos P.,” which had been scheduled to leave at 5:30 p.m. for Andros, Tinos, and Mykonos.
Fast Ferries also announced that none of its scheduled “Fast Ferries Andros” routes would run on Thursday, July 30.
That means both the 1:15 p.m. departure from Mykonos to Tinos, Andros, and Rafina, and the afternoon departure of the “Theologos P.” from Rafina, are canceled. The company said passengers are being notified directly about changes to their trips.
Cancellations at Lavrio too
The port of Lavrio is also affected, with afternoon departures for the ships “Marmari Express,” “Makedon,” and “Ionis” canceled. All three were headed to Kythnos.
What about routes from the Cyclades
For now, ships departing the islands toward Rafina are still running as scheduled. However, the strong winds could cause delays, and passengers are advised to keep an eye on official updates.
Weather forecasts suggest the difficult conditions could continue into Friday. Anyone planning to travel is urged to contact their ferry company or local port authorities before departure to check for any further schedule changes.
