A man has died after his car fell into an irrigation canal in northern Greece, prompting an emergency rescue operation by firefighters and paramedics in the early hours of Monday.

The incident occurred in the Niselio area of Imathia, a region in northern Greece, when passers-by alerted authorities after spotting a vehicle submerged in a canal.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and launched a difficult recovery effort under challenging conditions due to the depth of the water and its flow.

According to officials, six firefighters with three vehicles took part in the operation to retrieve the driver from the canal.

After being pulled from the water, the man was found unconscious and was immediately transferred by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Despite efforts to save him, medical staff later confirmed that the driver had died.
