Drug Bust at Athens Airport: Man Swallowed 72 Cocaine Capsules

Greek police arrested a 22-year-old Brazilian man at Athens International Airport after discovering he had ingested 840 grams of cocaine

A 22-year-old Brazilian man was arrested at Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” on Wednesday, October 15, after authorities discovered he had swallowed 72 oval-shaped packets containing cocaine. The total weight of the drugs was approximately 840 grams.

According to the Hellenic Police, the man arrived in Athens on a flight from France and was apprehended during a targeted inspection by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Division of the Hellenic Police’s Organized Crime Directorate. Acting on intelligence and using profiling techniques to identify potential traffickers, officers located and detained the suspect upon his arrival from abroad. Investigators believe he was acting as a “mule” for an international drug trafficking network operating between Latin America and Europe.

During the search, police also confiscated €560 in cash and a mobile phone. Authorities are now investigating the intended recipient of the narcotics within Greece.

The suspect has been charged with violating Greece’s narcotics laws and was referred to the competent prosecutor.
